Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions we hear from families considering adoption with us. If you don’t see yours, fill out the form below or call us at (734) 762-0909.

Why should I choose Forever Families?2020-02-23T17:43:18-05:00

Forever Families is a small agency, we can provide a personalized experience. Our experienced staff will walk you through the adoption process and is readily available via phone or email. We have been giving children families forever since 1997. Staff has decades of adoption experience and will be able to tailor an individual adoption plan to your needs.

We are so nervous to meet with the birth mother. What if she does not like us?2020-02-23T17:43:38-05:00

The birth mother is just as nervous to meet you. The initial meeting is not “an interview”, the birth mother has already chosen you from reviewing your profile book. The meeting is an opportunity to get to know one another and build a level of comfort for both parties. A staff will also be present at the meeting and will help facilitate conversation. The goal is for everyone to feel good about this initial meeting and alleviate anxiety about the next steps in the adoption process.

Why does a birth mother choose adoption?2020-02-23T17:43:58-05:00

There are many reasons why a birth mother may choose adoption. Often a birth mother may be struggling financially, not have an emotional support system, not have the support of the birth father, or be parenting other children. At times a birth parent may not feel the timing is right to parent. Whatever the reason, deciding to make an adoption plan for your baby is a very difficult and emotional decision. Forever Families is committed to providing counseling services to the birth mother both before and after the birth to help walk her through the emotional process of adoption. We have found that during the pregnancy the more time the birth mother gets to spend with the adoptive family and get to know them, the more balanced her decision is after the birth.

How do I get started?2020-02-23T17:44:19-05:00

You call to set up a personal consultation/orientation with the domestic adoption program supervisor. This is a one on one meeting where information on the program and the adoption process will be discussed. You will be able to bring all your questions to this meeting. You will then be given an application to start the home study process at the end of the meeting if you wish to proceed.

What ages of children can we adopt through your domestic infant program?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Through our domestic infant adoption program, we place children from newborn up to two years old. In most cases, your baby will go directly from the hospital into your adoptive home — there is no foster care or temporary placement in between.

Is Forever Families LGBTQ-friendly and open to single parents?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Yes. Forever Families, Inc. is LGBTQ-friendly and single-parent friendly. Our adoptive families come from many backgrounds and family structures, and we work to find the best fit between each birth parent and adoptive family regardless of how a family is shaped.

We don’t live in Michigan. Can we still adopt through Forever Families?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Yes. We work with home-study-approved families from out of state who need assistance with interstate adoptions. Cross-state placements are coordinated through the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC), which Michigan and every other U.S. state participate in.

What does the home study and approval process involve?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

All approved families go through a thorough investigative process. That includes criminal and child abuse history checks, in-home visits to confirm the home is safe and appropriate, a financial review to confirm stability, medical clearances from your doctor, personal references, and a comprehensive social history and parenting interview. You’ll also complete adoption-specific training before being approved to wait for a match.

How are adoptive families matched with birth mothers?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Birth mothers choose the adoptive family from profile books we provide. Once a birth mother selects you, your adoption worker arranges a meeting between your family and the birth mother — the worker is present to help facilitate the conversation. After that initial meeting, you and the birth mother decide together whether to move forward and what type of contact you’d like to maintain after placement.

What support do we get from Forever Families while we’re waiting for a placement?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

We host a monthly virtual support group for waiting adoptive families with rotating training topics and guest speakers. Your adoption worker is also available throughout your wait — by phone or email — for questions, encouragement, and ongoing support.

What kind of post-adoption support do you offer?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Once your adoption is finalized, you can join our in-person post-adoption support group, which meets every other month for a community activity. We continue to be available to answer questions and connect you with resources after placement.

Are there financial supports available to help with adoption costs?2026-04-27T22:32:11-04:00

Yes. Our agency provides information about the federal adoption tax credit and adoption grants that may be available to your family. Your adoption worker can walk you through these resources during the home-study and matching process.
